Baner Wasn’t Always an Address on a Brochure
Long before it was a brochure address, Baner had its own identity — one that still shapes how the area looks and feels today.
An old village, not a new suburb
Baner traces to the 17th century under the Kalamkar family. The Tukai Mata temple on Baner Hill, at roughly 678 metres one of Pune’s higher points, remains the area’s founding landmark, with cave-temple structures locally dated much earlier still.
An orchard economy
Before IT money arrived, Baner was known regionally for the "Baneri Bore" — a locally famous variety of Indian plum — reflecting an agrarian past that PMC only absorbed later.
Cafés, not malls, today
Unlike Balewadi, Baner notably has no major shopping mall or multiplex of its own — its retail identity runs instead on a dense cluster of restaurants, cafés and pubs, next to the roughly 500-acre Baner-Pashan Biodiversity Park.
The metro arrives, in stages
Pune Metro Line 3’s Maan-Balewadi stretch received safety clearance and began passenger service in early September 2026; the Baner High Street-Shivajinagar stretch, with stations including Baner Gaon and Baner itself, is expected by March 2027.
